I was in college when the original series was on. I can remember sitting in the dorm watching it.
I later became a big fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation (ST:TNG). After watching it for several years, it became painful to watch The Original Series. It suffered so much by comparison.
Yes, I've been to several Star Trek conventions, mostly Starbase Indy. Yes, I've bought some Star Trek products such as a "Star Fleet Academy" t-shirt. Yes, we've written a script and submitted it to ST:TNG.
There were 5 of us who decided we wanted to write a script for ST:TNG. I lead this effort (mainly we met at my place). However the writing was shared amongst everyone on the team. Our goal was to write a script which was worthy of submitting to the show.
To do this, we had to learn what a script should look like. We got a book out of the library for starters. We then found a place which sold scripts for episodes and we ordered several. We then contacted the show and got a script submission packet.
The script was a lot of fun. Once we completed it and sent it off, we had a "read-thru" party. Family and friends got together, everyone was assigned a part and we started reading the script. A fun time was had by all.
As I like to describe it, our script didn't quite come back by return mail. However we did get a polite form letter turning it down. At the time we didn't know how bad our chances were. Later we learned that ST:TNG received around 3,000 spec (speculative or unsolicited) scripts PER YEAR. That's around 10 per day.
Still we had a great time. Here's the script. Fair warning. It's around 100,000 bytes and could take awhile to access. However it is nothing but plain text with a couple of lines of HTML wrapped around it. There are a lot of blanks in it due to standard script formatting. It could probably be compressed down if I bothered to take the trouble.
Another fair warning. I think it drags a bit from the middle of Act 2 to the middle of Act 4. However there are also some things in it which I'm pretty pleased with. If you have the patience to wade through it, enjoy!
